Obituaries : Joe R. Munden Sr.; Ex-Atlantic Oil Roughneck

Joe R. Munden Sr. of Oxnard, a former oil field worker, died Saturday at home after a brief illness. He was 58.

Munden was born April 25, 1938, in Marshall, Texas, and had been a Ventura County resident for 22 years, after coming from Honolulu, Hawaii.

He roughnecked for Atlantic Oil Co. for 15 years. He was an avid bowler who participated in several leagues, and he enjoyed many outdoor activities, including deer hunting.

Munden is survived by his wife of 39 years, Esmeralda of Oxnard; three sons, Joe R. Munden Jr. of Central Point, Ore., Charles Munden and James C. Munden, both of Oxnard; two daughters, Esme Ann Miller of Ventura and Kathleen C. Thomas of Oxnard; a stepson, Jeffrey Nester of Oxnard; a brother, Howell Munden of Marshall; a sister, Judy Beesinger of Marshall; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, Ventura. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Jim Wells officiating. Burial will follow in Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.
