Penn State Survives Indiana

Joe Jurevicius scored one touchdown on a 57-yard reception and set up three others with big catches in the second half as No. 17 Penn State rallied to overtake Indiana, 48-26, in a Big Ten game Saturday at Bloomington, Ind.

Backup Mike McQueary completed all nine passes for 184 yards, including 125 yards in the second half as Penn State came back from a 20-10 deficit.

“It was all business,” McQueary said. “We were behind at the time, and I didn’t really think about how it felt. I just wanted to get us going.”

Indiana, 2-6 overall and 0-5 in the Big Ten, dominated the first half on the ground, but the Nittany Lions (7-2, 3-2) stopped the Hoosiers the rest of the way and scored more than twice as many points in the second half as in their first four conference games combined.

“We had a little more determination to get it done in the second half,” Coach Joe Paterno said. “Indiana cleaned our clock in the first half on both sides of the ball.”

Indiana had only four first downs in the final two quarters.

No. 10 Michigan 44, Minnesota 10--Chris Howard ran for two touchdowns, including an 86-yarder, as the Wolverines repeatedly burned the Gophers (3-4, 0-4) for big plays and claimed the Little Brown Jug for the 10th consecutive year.

The Wolverines (6-1, 3-1), whose 10-game winning streak is the longest in the 103-year-old rivalry, also got three sacks from David Bowens as they won the jug for the 27th time in 29 years.

Michigan State 30, Wisconsin 13--Sedrick Irvin won the battle of freshmen running backs at East Lansing, Mich., helping the Spartans to their third consecutive victory.

Irvin rushed for 125 yards and one touchdown and caught a 25-yard pass for another as Michigan State (5-3, 4-1) dealt the Badgers (3-4, 0-4) their fourth consecutive defeat.

Ron Dayne, Wisconsin’s 260-pound freshman running back, was held to 81 yards in 15 carries. Dayne entered the game as the Badgers’ top rusher with 551 yards after running for a career-best 139 yards against Northwestern.
