A robber shot and critically wounded a Brinks armored car guard Monday as he carried cash out of a grocery store, authorities said.

The unidentified guard was hit in a major neck artery and was in grave condition, said Ginger Edward, a spokeswoman for Columbia West Anaheim Medical Center.

The robber hid behind a pillar outside a grocery store, waiting for the guard to emerge with a bag of money, said Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Wilkerson.

About 11:40 a.m., the gunman shot the guard once and fled with an accomplice to a waiting vehicle, Wilkerson said. That car was found a short distance away, and witnesses said they saw the men get into a Ford Taurus station wagon and drive off. They were last seen driving south on Knott Avenue.

Authorities alerted police agencies in neighboring counties to be on the lookout for the car, Wilkerson said.

The wounded guard was the passenger in the Brinks truck. The driver did not shoot at the gunman, Wilkerson said.

The shopping plaza was crowded at the time, he said.

Mark Kent, an assistant branch manager for Brinks, said he could not release any information about the attack. Marvin Moss, a spokesman at Brinks’ Connecticut headquarters, did not return a phone call.
