Nature Group Sees a Swan in Old House
The city’s 72-year-old Swanner House may soon have a new role.
The South Coast Audubon Society will unveil a proposal to the City Council on Tuesday to turn the city-owned property into a nature interpretive center.
The nature center would focus on the history and ecology of the nearby farmland. It would also provide a haven for bird-watchers and offer historical tours of the city’s 30-acre Swanner Ranch and adjacent city-owned Williams Ranch.
The Swanner House is rented for residential use on a month-to-month basis.
When the Swanner Ranch property and ranch house were purchased for about $6.9 million in 1990 as part of the city’s open-space bond measure, the city wanted to turn it into a museum, historical interpretive center, bed and breakfast and rural community park. But because of a lack of funding, the city’s vision never came to fruition.
