Riordan Plans Conference on How Cities Can Fight AIDS
Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan is planning to host a regional conference next month to explore ways that cities can help fight AIDS.
Riordan said Friday he is inviting 75 mayors of big cities in California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii to the Western Pacific Mayors Conference on AIDS, to be held Dec. 4 at the Airport Marriott Hotel. He said San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown has agreed to attend and share his city’s experience.
During a breakfast meeting he convened this year with mayors across Los Angeles County, Riordan said, he realized “that not all cities are as in tune with ways of helping with the problem as Los Angeles is.” One mayor turned down the invitation to participate because he did not believe AIDS was a problem in his own city, a response that Riordan said stunned and mystified him.
Riordan plans to formally announce the conference tonight during the “Spirit of Hope” awards dinner sponsored by Being Alive: People with HIV/AIDS Action Coalition.
