A blown transformer is being blamed for numerous power outages Saturday evening along Ventura Avenue and the Ojai Freeway in west Ventura, authorities said.

The outages began about 4:45 p.m. and affected 1,792 customers, primarily between Sycamore Drive and East Santa Clara Street, said Southern California Edison spokeswoman Cathy Sedlik. Power outages were also reported near Cabrillo Middle School in Ventura and in various locations in Meiners Oaks.

About an hour after the outages began, firefighters from the county and Ventura city fire departments responded to a report of several explosions near the old Petro Chem plant on Crooked Palm Road. They later discovered an electrical transformer and pole on fire in the area.

An Edison crew was dispatched to replace the transformer, and power was back up to all customers at 7:14 p.m., Sedlik said.

“No one was without power for more than 30 seconds,” Sedlik said. “Nobody was completely without power.”
