Syracuse Gets Special Victory Over West Virginia

Special, indeed, were the plays turned in by Syracuse’s special teams in a 30-7 victory over No. 18-ranked West Virginia Saturday in a Big East Conference game at Morgantown, W.Va.

Phil Nash blocked two punts and Deon Maddux returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown as Syracuse took full advantage of West Virginia’s not-so-special teams.

The Orangemen, 5-2 overall, 5-0 in the Big East and ranked 10th nationally in defense, held the Mountaineers (7-2, 3-2) to minus-10 yards rushing.

No. 22 Miami 57, Temple 22--Tremain Mack had 205 yards returning kickoffs in helping the Hurricanes (6-2, 4-0) beat the Owls (1-8, 0-4) in a Big East game at Philadelphia.

Ronnie McAda completed all seven of his passes, two for touchdowns, as Army (8-0) recorded a 41-21 victory over Division I-AA Lafayette (3-4) at West Point, N.Y., to equal its best start since 1950. Army ran for 321 yards . . . Ken Oxendine rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns to lead Virginia Tech (6-1) to a 47-16 victory over Southwestern Louisiana (4-5) at Blacksburg, Va. . . . Harvard (3-4, 1-3) missed a last-second field goal, allowing Dartmouth (7-0, 4-0) to pull out a 6-3 Ivy League at Boston. It was the 100th meeting between the schools.

Lee Roberts threw three touchdowns passes, including the game-winner with 5:12 left, as No. 23 Southern Mississippi (8-1, 4-0) ran its win streak to seven games with a 21-17 Conference USA victory over Cincinnati (4-5, 2-3) at Hattiesburg, Miss. . . . Sebastian Villarreal kicked a 32-yard field goal with six seconds left to give Houston (5-1, 2-1) a 20-17 Conference USA victory over Tulane (2-6, 1-4) at New Orleans. . . . Junior Ryan Wade, formerly a reserve linebacker, powered in from the two on his first collegiate run for a third-quarter touchdown, leading Louisville (5-4, 2-2) to a 13-10 Conference USA victory over Memphis (3-6, 2-3) at Louisville, Ky.

Chris Lemon ran for three touchdowns and backup quarterback Eric Bennett passed for three as Nevada (6-3, 2-1) rolled to a 63-14 Big West victory over New Mexico State (1-8, 0-4) at Reno. . . . Patrick Mullins threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Nakia Jenkins as Utah State (6-4, 4-0) rallied for a 21-13 Big West victory over North Texas (3-6, 1-2) at Logan, Utah. . . . Aaron Flowers completed 29 of 52 passes for 457 yards and four touchdowns but it wasn’t enough as Cal State Northridge (5-4) fell to 8-0 Montana, 43-36, at Northridge. Montana’s Brian Ah threw for four touchdowns. . . . Reserve quarterback Greg Hyland passed for 225 yards and three touchdowns to lead Chapman (6-1) to a 35-21 victory over host Occidental (0-7). Hyland replaced Curtis Robinson, who suffered a knee injury in the first quarter. . . . Marcus Slaten came off the bench to rush for 114 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter to lead Azusa Pacific (7-1) to a 24-14 victory over Menlo College (5-2) at Atherton, Calif. . . . Anthony Rice rushed for 149 yards and four touchdowns in 33 carries to lead visiting La Verne (6-1, 4-0) to a 37-28 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
