Angels Will Announce Collins’ Hiring

Share

The Angels will announce the hiring of Terry Collins as their next manager at an 11 a.m. news conference today in Anaheim Stadium.

Collins, 47, spent the past three seasons at Houston, managing the Astros to a 224-197 record and three second-place finishes in the National League Central before being fired on Oct. 4 and replaced by former broadcaster Larry Dierker.

A late-season collapse this past September--the Astros lost 17 of their final 25 games, going from 2 1/2 games up to six games back--cost Collins his job. The Astros, however, still must pay Collins $275,000 in 1997 because he had another year on his contract.

Collins, a former infielder who played 10 minor-league seasons but never reached the majors, spent 11 seasons as a minor league manager, compiling an 824-736 record in the Dodger and Pittsburgh Pirate organizations.

Collins will be the 15th Angel manager in 37 years--16th if you count Gene Mauch’s two stints. Collins replaces Marcel Lachemann, who resigned last Aug. 6.
