Golf Tourney Will Benefit Youth Center

A Veteran’s Day golf tournament at Braemar Country Club will benefit students at the Mid Valley Youth Center, a psychiatric residential treatment center and school for adolescents in Van Nuys.

Opened in 1988, the youth center is currently home to 84 boys and girls ages 12 to 17 who were referred by probation officers and the county Department of Public Social Services.

The center provides educational, recreation, health and treatment programs for hard-to-place youths from a variety of backgrounds, said Director Peggy Wilson-Jordan.

“A lot of these kids have gotten off to a tough start,” said Wilson-Jordan. “We teach them that they have a choice, they can return to the lifestyle that got them here or they can do something positive with their lives.”

Wilson-Jordan said that proceeds from the tournament will be used to help purchase a van that will be used to transport students to a variety of activities, such as athletic competitions and cultural outings.

“This is our first golf tournament and our major fund-raiser for the year,” said Wilson-Jordan. “We’re hoping a lot of people will choose to play golf on Veteran’s Day.”

A $150 entry fee entitles participants to a full round of golf at the Tarzana club and lunch and dinner at an awards banquet.

Golfers may compete for a variety of donated prizes including golf clubs and a lease on a new car for the person who scores a hole-in-one, Wilson-Jordan said.

Braemar members who participate will receive a discount on the entry fee.
