Decision Expected on Use of Police Funds
After more than a month of debate, the City Council tonight is expected to decide how to spend $108,405 in state crime-fighting funds.
In September, the Citizens Option for Public Safety program, which is known as COPS, allocated $100 million in state funds to cities based on population.
San Clemente’s share could be used to improve traffic enforcement, buy a trailer-mounted radar to monitor car speeds, or improve the Police Department’s investigative unit.
In a separate matter, the City Council will consider whether San Clemente should remain with the Orange County Public Library system or operate its own library.
The city staff has recommended that the council not abandon the countywide system.
In a report to the council, City Manager Michael W. Parness said “the benefits of a large library system . . . are crucial to the quality of services our residents receive.”
Over the past several years, the countywide system has taken some severe financial hits, leading a few cities to break away.
