Psychologist Placed on 5 Years’ Probation
A San Clemente psychologist has been placed on probation for five years by the state Department of Consumer Affairs, which charged him with gross negligence and inappropriate treatment, such as hitting a patient with a pillow, officials said Tuesday.
Mark A. Johnson did not contest the charges, according to the board. His probation requires that he undergo psychological evaluation, engage a practice monitor for five years and complete 20 hours of course work annually.
He also was ordered to pay the state board about $9,000 for investigation and enforcement costs.
Johnson was accused of beating a patient with a pillow and telling her she had been taken over by spirits.
According to Tom O’Connor, the executive officer at the state Department of Consumer Affairs, Johnson also was accused of talking to the patient about his own sexual relationship with his wife.
Neither Johnson nor his attorney could be reached for comment.
State officials ask that anyone with a complaint against a psychologist write to the Board of Psychology in Sacramento or call (916) 263-2699.
