Park District Plans Benefit Hike to Sea

Share

The Conejo Recreation and Park District on Saturday will host one of its major fund-raisers, “Sycamore to the Sea,” an eight-mile hike from Rancho Sierra Vista Park to the Pacific Ocean to benefit the district’s educational programs.

The event, supported by the California Department of Parks and Recreation and the National Park Service, helps support low-cost outdoor educational programs offered to schools and scout groups in the Thousand Oaks area.

The guided hikes, moderate in difficulty, will begin from noon to 2 p.m. at Rancho Sierra Vista Park on Potrero Road in Newbury Park. The trail is paved, and quickly drops into a canyon filled with stunning sycamore trees and green meadows that ends at the ocean.

The hikes will end from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., and will include a picnic at the finish under a full moon in Sycamore Cove on Pacific Coast Highway, south of Point Mugu.

Hikers will then be shuttled back to Newbury Park by bus. The cost is $15.

Those interested in taking part need to register in advance with the park district’s outdoor unit, and specify whether they want a meat or vegetarian sandwich at the picnic.

Participants are asked to bring water, sunscreen or a hat, and a good pair of walking shoes. For information, call 495-2163.
