Cancer Institute to Hold 5K, 10K Runs

The legacy of a young Canadian cancer victim comes to West Los Angeles on Sunday with the launch of the John Wayne Cancer Institute’s Terry Fox run.

Participants in three events--a 10K run, a 5K run / walk and a children’s run--will raise money through pledges for the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica.

The run has already raised $135,000 from corporate sponsors, said Sandy Cohen, event co-chairwoman. “We are very thrilled for the reason that every single dime that’s raised will go for research,” Cohen said.

In 1980, Terry Fox ran halfway across Canada to raise money for cancer research and increase public awareness of the disease. Fox, who had lost a leg to bone cancer and ran with a prosthesis, suffered a relapse during the run and died at the age of 22. The run raised $24 million for cancer research.

The West Los Angeles run will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Veterans Park, at Wilshire and Sepulveda boulevards in West Los Angeles. A free children’s festival with face painting, a petting zoo and music will also be held. Registration is $20. For more information, call (310) 582-7073.
