Sunny Hills Shuts Down Fullerton

Sunny Hills’ defense proved to be too much for Fullerton as the Lancers shut out the Indians, 35-0, in a Freeway League game Friday night at Buena Park High.

“Our defense has to play well for us to win,” said Sunny Hills Coach Tim Devaney.

With the victory, Sunny Hills (6-3, 3-1) remains in a tie for first in league.

Sunny Hills held Fullerton (3-6, 0-4) to 35 yards in offense while sacking Fullerton quarterback Justin Bruce five times.

Adam Rodriguez sparked the Lancers’ offense, scoring twice on runs of two and nine yards, both in the first quarter.

After missing a 32-yard field goal late in the first half, Jared Bruce redeemed himself by intercepting a pass by Bruce on the next play. Two plays later, Lancer quarterback Chris Zeiler hit Daren Solomon for a 15-yard touchdown pass to take a 21-0 lead.

Zeiler, who did not complete a pass and had two interceptions last week against Troy, rebounded Friday, completing seven of 10 passes for 64 yards.

“He had a bad night last week,” Devaney said. “He needed to get his confidence back and he did.”

Zeiler also added a one-yard run with 2 minutes 49 seconds left in the third quarter, capping an eight-play, 40-yard drive.

Guy Porter, who scored two special-team touchdowns last week, added another with a 67-yard punt return, ending the scoring with 2:18 left in the third quarter.
