SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The city is seeking bids from companies interested in developing Heritage Block, a proposed 1.2-acre collection of historic buildings at Brea Boulevard and Ash Street.

The project will attempt to preserve commercial and residential architecture to convey Brea’s downtown at the time of the city’s incorporation in 1917.

At least five buildings--the Brea Hotel, Delaney House, Wahl Building, La Habra Valley Bank and Sam’s Place--have been selected for inclusion in the project.

The facade of Sam’s Place, a popular tavern that was torn down during the city’s downtown redevelopment, was saved and will be attached to a new building, according to city reports.

City officials said they will accept bids for the project through January, conduct interviews in February and hope to sign an agreement by June.

So far, the city has spent about $3.1 million to acquire the land for the project, a sum that includes $850,000 to purchase the Brea Hotel, built in 1910. The historic hotel will be relocated slightly and remodeled, according to the plan.
