City Lowers Cost of Puppy Licenses

Share

This city has a case of puppy love. Having set out to establish a “bark park” where canines could frolic free of leashes, city officials are also lowering the cost of dog licenses for pooches less than 10 months old. Annual fees for pups will drop to $10 from $20, starting in December.

“It will encourage people to at least get their dogs licensed, so if they are lost or whatever they can get them found,” said Councilwoman Sandra L. Genis, who suggested the new fee structure.

Owners of spayed and neutered dogs also pay a reduced $10, but because many pets are too young for sterilization, the City Council lowered the fees, Genis said.

Officials said they hope the savings will encourage people to spay and neuter their pets.

“When they come up for renewal, they’ll say, ‘I don’t want to pay $10 extra,’ ” Genis said.

Dog permits are available at the Costa Mesa Police Department, 99 Fair Drive.
