Brodeur Continues Mastery of Capitals

The Washington Capitals finally scored against New Jersey Devil goalie Martin Brodeur.

Winning against Brodeur and the Devils, however, is another matter.

Defenseman Scott Niedermayer scored at 3:04 of overtime Tuesday night at East Rutherford, N.J., to give the Devils a 3-2 victory over the Capitals and their fifth consecutive victory. It is New Jersey’s longest winning streak since the club opened the 1993-94 season with seven straight victories.

The Devils have not lost in their last 10 meetings with the Capitals, going 9-0-1.

Brodeur set a club record of 189:58 shutout minutes before the Capitals’ Andrei Nikolishin ended it with five minutes remaining in the second period.

With 18 saves, Brodeur kept alive his career unbeaten streak against Washington, which now stands at 11-0-1.

Pittsburgh 3, Buffalo 0--Jaromir Jagr assisted on the first goal, then scored twice at Pittsburgh to back goaltender Ken Wregget, who stopped 25 shots for his seventh career shutout.

The victory was the Penguins’ fifth in a row at home.

Sabre backup goalie Andrei Trefilov was making his second start in 17 games this year. In his other game, he gave up six goals in losing to the New York Rangers.

Buffalo has gone 2-5-1 after winning four straight.

Hartford 4, San Jose 3--First-period goals by Curtis Leschyshyn and Glen Featherstone in a 38-second span helped the Whalers build a commanding lead before they withstood a furious third-period rally to win at San Jose.

Defenseman Al Iafrate, who pulled San Jose within a goal at 11:31 of the third period with a slap shot from near the blue line, had a chance to tie the game with 30 seconds remaining. But his shot from about 10 feet hit the post.
