City Approves Site for Adult Care Facility

Acacia Adult Day Services Center is one step closer to finding a permanent home.

The center, a day-care facility for the frail elderly, is now housed at a church but has outgrown that space, officials said. The City Council on Tuesday night gave approval for the center to build a 12,000-square-foot facility on about two acres along Acacia Parkway.

The Acacia Parkway property held Garden Grove’s first City Hall, a 1920s-era converted schoolhouse that was demolished last year.

A five-year lease that could be extended to 30 years was approved by the city’s redevelopment agency and the City Council. The center will initially operate in a modular building, to be replaced by a permanent structure when financing is secured.

Mallory Vega, executive director of the day-care center, said that the temporary facility will open in May, with the permanent center scheduled to open in December 1998.

The center has launched a $3.2-million fund-raising drive to pay for the permanent facility, Vega said, and already has $1.4 million in public and private commitments.
