Brown Calls Audible: ‘I’m Sorry, Elvis’

Elvis Grbac’s fellow 49ers may have thrown flowers from San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown in the trash.

But the mayor has finally gotten his chance apologize to the quarterback in a phone call to the 49er locker room.

Brown is still paying for calling Grbac “an embarrassment to humankind” for his performance in the 49ers’ 20-17 loss to Dallas.

The mayor later discovered that Grbac’s son had undergone surgery to correct a congenital spinal defect before the game.

“There was a lot of apologizing to me and my family,” Grbac said after talking to Brown. “He realized he made a stupid remark. He was really sorry for me and the team.

“For me, the call was important. It was a gesture on his part that he made a mistake. He told me he has to come back here and make amends. He was very humble.”
