Gill Nets First New Jersey Win

Kendall Gill scored 32 points to lead New Jersey and rookie Coach John Calipari to its first victory of the season.

Rookie Kerry Kittles finished with 19 points, Robert Pack added 16 and Jayson Williams had 18 rebounds for New Jersey.

Dale Ellis led the Nuggets with 27 points and Antonio McDyess added 23.

The Nets, who lost their first five games for the worst start in franchise history, never trailed in the fourth quarter as Gill and Kittles each scored nine points.

Chicago 97, Atlanta 69--Michael Jordan, held to two points in the first 21 1/2 minutes, finished with 25 as the Bulls remained unbeaten, trouncing the Hawks at Chicago.

Atlanta, which was without starting guards Mookie Blaylock and Steve Smith, had its lowest point total since scoring 68 against Cleveland on Jan. 26, 1995.

Dennis Rodman had 15 rebounds for the Bulls, who take a 10-0 record into a seven-game trip.

Washington 106, Boston 92--The Bullets held the Celtics scoreless in the final six minutes and, as a result, Boston remains winless on the road.

Washington, which trailed by 12 points in the third quarter and by five to begin the fourth, closed with a 17-3 run, while holding the Celtics to 10 points in the final quarter.

Juwan Howard and Rod Strickland scored 19 apiece and Chris Webber had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Bullets.

Dana Radja scored 26 for the Celtics.

Orlando 92, Toronto 87--The Magic got 25 points and 11 rebounds from Nick Anderson to defeat the Raptors at Orlando despite the absence of Penny Hardaway, who faces knee surgery today.

Brian Shaw took over the starting point guard job and had 10 assists, while Rony Seikaly scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Walt Williams led Toronto with 29 points, but only four in the second half.

Philadelphia 91, Miami 89--Rex Walters sank a three-point shot with 33 seconds remaining at Miami as the 76ers held the Heat to two points in the final six minutes.

Walters’ shot capped a 14-2 run to close the game.

Jerry Stackhouse led Philadelphia with 33 points, 19 in the second half. Derrick Coleman added 20 and Walters had a season-high 14.

Detroit 102, Cleveland 98--Grant Hill scored eight of his 27 points in the last six minutes as the Pistons ended a nine-game losing streak at Cleveland.

The Cavaliers allowed an opponent to reach 100 points for the first time in 15 games.

Utah 88, Dallas 87--John Stockton scored 23 points, including two free throws with two seconds left, as the Jazz edged the Mavericks at Dallas.

Derek Harper missed two free throws for Dallas with 20 seconds left.

Karl Malone scored 19 points and Jeff Hornacek and Byron Russell had 15 each for the Jazz. Chris Gatling had 23 points and 20 rebounds for Dallas.

New York 82, Minnesota 79--The Timberwolves, with a chance to go two games over .500 for the first time in franchise history, were held without a basket for almost six minutes in the fourth quarter at New York.

They had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but Tom Gugliotta missed a three-point shot from the right corner.

Patrick Ewing led New York with 26 points and 15 rebounds, and John Starks scored 11 of his 13 points in the final 12:01 of the game as the Knicks beat Minnesota for the 11th consecutive time.

Houston 115, Golden State 103--Clyde Drexler ignored his sore knees and scored a season-high 33 points as the Rockets held off the Warriors at Houston for their eighth victory in nine games.

Hakeem Olajuwon scored 23 points as Houston had six players in double figures. Sprewell led the Warriors with 23 points and 11 assists.

Seattle 108, Sacramento 96--Hersey Hawkins scored seven points during a late run at Seattle and the SuperSonics went on to win their sixth in a row.

Gary Payton scored 19 points and Detlef Schrempf 16 for the SuperSonics, who led the whole way. Shawn Kemp had 25 points and 12 rebounds, but went to the bench with 10:50 left after committing his fourth and fifth fouls in a span of 13 seconds.

Mitch Richmond scored 27 points for the Kings.
