Golden West Boots Chance Against Dons

Rancho Santiago held on to win, 30-29, after Golden West kicker Kevin Bever missed an extra-point attempt with 1 minute 54 seconds left in the Mission Conference Central Division game Saturday at Orange Coast College.

Golden West (1-8, 1-4) cut the lead to seven when Justin Miller caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Brain Baughman with 5:30 left to play. Baughman struck again 3 1/2 minutes later, finding Mike McCullough with a 32-yard touchdown pass to give the Rustlers the chance to tie the score and send the game into overtime.

The Rustlers (1-8, 1-4) fell behind, 30-16, after Rancho Santiago’s Mike Ogas caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Matt Mitchell with 8:32 left to play.

Ogas had 10 receptions for 169 yards for Rancho Santiago (5-4, 3-2). Mitchell completed 22 of 36 passes for 306 yards and three touchdowns.

In other Mission Conference games:

Fullerton 33, San Diego Mesa 14--Chris Diaz made four field goals in the victory for Fullerton (5-4). Diaz’s first field goal of 49 yards equaled the longest of his career. Diaz also was successful from 38, 44 and 26 yards.

The Hornets, who have had only five interceptions before this game, had four Saturday.

David Bedard scored Fullerton’s first touchdown in the third quarter on a four-yard run. Anthony Scott later scored on a nine-yard touchdown reception from Paul Waldrip.

Palomar 38, Orange Coast 3--Palomar’s defense held Orange Coast (1-9, 0-6) to 144 in total offense. Palomar also intercepted two John Frank passes and returned both for touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Keith Miller scored the first on a 22-yard return and Henry Tupuola scored the second on a 12-yard return. Running back Marvin Morris led Palomar (6-4, 4-2), rushing 36 times for 179 yards and a touchdown.

Nate Bennett kicked a 47-yard field goal for Orange Coast’s only score.

In the Fullerton men’s basketball tournament:

Eastern Utah 86, Saddleback 67--Eastern Utah grabbed 41 rebounds in a second-round victory over Saddleback (1-1). Ime Udoka scored 30 points and had six rebounds for Eastern Utah, ranked 20th in the nation. Harold Arceneaux had 17 points for Eastern Utah.

Scott Duffy scored 15 points for Saddleback (1-1).

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Cerritos 77, Rancho Santiago 60--Mark Saukkola scored 14 points for Rancho Santiago (1-1).

Rio Hondo 78, Orange Coast 67--Duane Curtis led Orange Coast (0-2) with 35 points and 13 rebounds.

Southwestern 98, Irvine Valley 93--Brandon Hearvey led Irvine Valley (1-0) with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Daryl Todd had 20 points and 10 rebounds.

In the Victor Valley men’s basketball tournament:

Victor Valley 81, Cypress 78--Victor Valley (1-1) outscored Cypress, 43-29, and held off a late charge by the Chargers (0-2). Willie Allen and Frankie Floyd each scored 18 points for Cypress in the consolation game.

In the Chaffey women’s basketball tournament:

Ventura 98, Orange Coast 58--Orange Coast’s Dianne Pulido scored 10 points in a semifinal loss to Ventura (2-0). Norie Nakase scored eight points for Orange Coast (1-1).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Cypress 70, Palomar 24--Polly Pawlowski scored 20 points and Linda Rodriguez had 12 points and seven rebounds as Cypress rolled over host Palomar in the season opener.
