Holtz Says Little About His Future

Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz, expected to announce this week that he will leave after his 11th season at Notre Dame, was noncommittal again on Sunday.

“There’s a time and a place to address certain questions, there’s a time and place of who to address it to,” Holtz said. “Right now, in the media is not the time.”

Former UCLA coach Terry Donahue declined comment Sunday on a Times report that he is on a short list of candidates. A source close to Donahue said Donahue initially declined to interview for the position because he is hesitant to leave the West Coast and his CBS broadcasting job, but another source said Donahue is leaving his options open.

Gary Barnett, who led Northwestern to the Rose Bowl last year, is considered the leading candidate. There is a buyout clause in the five-year, $5-million contract Barnett signed after last season, but it would be a costly one, reports say.
