LAPD Displays the Latest in Its Computer System

Carmen Sazzolino watched the display of computers at the LAPD’s Hollenbeck Station with some amazement.

Monday’s demonstration of computers that allow officers to write crime reports and communicate by e-mail with other stations was light years beyond the simple switchboard Sazzolino operated at Hollenbeck back in 1951.

“It is just fantastic, but kind of hard to believe,” said Sazzolino, 79, who was among the Eastside residents and community leaders attending the demonstration.

The computer systems, some of which has been in use for nearly a year, is a gift from the Mayor’s Alliance for a Safer Los Angeles. The alliance raised $16 million in private funds to install the system in all 18 LAPD divisions.

Patrol commander Tom Moselle said the computers allow officers to spend more time on the streets. And he can’t wait to see what future technology will bring. “It kind of makes you want to stick around to see what will happen,” said Moselle.
