Anti-Crime Efforts Will Be Discussed

Bernard Parks, deputy chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, will discuss police efforts to stop organized crime, terrorism, vice and illegal Internet activity at a public meeting Wednesday sponsored by the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Assn.

“Residents are concerned about crime on the street,” said association president Richard Close. “Deputy Chief Parks will explain what the LAPD is doing to control these problems which have [brought] havoc on other large U.S. cities.”

Close said most people, when they think of crime in L.A., don’t think of the issues that will be discussed at Wednesday’s meeting.

“Vice is a major problem in the Valley,” he said. “There is prostitution here. I’m sure ideas will come up [Wednesday] about how to fight that.”

Another issue likely to surface, Close said, is fallout from the Christopher Commission’s list of rogue police officers. As head of the department’s Internal Affairs division, Parks will be able to offer his insight into the effort to rid the force of corruption.

Residents are invited to attend the 8 p.m. meeting at Glendale Federal Bank, 13300 Ventura Blvd.
