Seattle Is Stretched to Extend Streak

The Seattle SuperSonics found a way to turn a blowout into an exciting game.

Shawn Kemp scored 34 points and Gary Payton had 31 as Seattle, after squandering a 16-point lead in the final six minutes of regulation, stretched its winning streak to nine by defeating the Washington Bullets, 115-110, in double overtime Wednesday at Landover, Md.

The SuperSonics withstood a superb effort by the Bullets’ Chris Webber, who had 34 points and 13 rebounds in a career-high 56 minutes. Webber tied the game with a three-pointer late in regulation and scored all 10 of Washington’s points in the first overtime.

Chicago 113, Phoenix 99--Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen each scored 37 points at Phoenix as the Bulls victimized the Suns for their 11th victory in a row.

The Suns (0-10) are off to their worst start ever.

Pippen made six of nine on three-pointers and finished with a season-high point total. Jordan left the game with 7:16 to go after shooting 16 for 29. Pippen came out a minute later after making 15 of 23 shots to go with eight rebounds and seven assists.

Michael Finley scored 17 points off the bench and Danny Manning added 16 points and 10 rebounds for Phoenix.

Charlotte 93, New York 86--Anthony Mason and Vlade Divac spoiled Larry Johnson’s return to Charlotte as the Hornets ended a four-game losing streak.

Mason, acquired in the deal that sent Johnson to the Knicks, had 20 points, five rebounds and four assists. Divac had 17 of his season-high 23 points in the second half and added 13 rebounds.

Johnson had nine points and four fouls in 27 minutes.

Patrick Ewing had 18 points for the Knicks, who led by 13 in the third quarter but turned it over 10 times in the fourth.

Miami 94, Vancouver 75--Isaac Austin scored a season-high 17 points and the Heat held the Grizzlies to 30 points in the second half at Vancouver, Canada.

Austin, a third-year center from Arizona State, took over for Alonzo Mourning after the Heat’s starting center got into foul trouble. Austin played 30 minutes to Mourning’s 21 and outscored his teammate, 17-14.

Indiana 103, Philadelphia 92--Reggie Miller scored 22 points and Travis Best had 18 points and eight assists as the Pacers defeated the 76ers at Philadelphia.

Derrick Coleman had 21 points and 12 rebounds for Philadelphia, which played without starting guard Allen Iverson, who is out with a separated left shoulder.

Detroit 108, Boston 83--The Pistons improved their road record to 5-0 and their overall record to 9-1 by routing the Celtics at Boston.

Grant Hill scored 23 points, Lindsey Hunter had 22, Otis Thorpe had 13 and Joe Dumars added 12. Antoine Walker led the Celtics with 18 points and nine rebounds.
