Hudler Looks to Be on His Way Out

The Angels gained a veteran infielder when they signed Dave Hollins Wednesday, but they might lose another one.

Rex Hudler says he has been “humbled and flattered” by contract offers from the Dodgers, Indians, Orioles and Phillies. All are believed to be two-year deals worth about $1 million a year with an option for a third year. The Angels, who have yet to offer Hudler a contract, probably wouldn’t be willing to match that.

“We like [Hudler] a lot and we are very much interested,” said Fred Claire, Dodger executive vice president, “but we’ll see where it all leads.”

Hudler, a nonrestricted free agent who hit .311 with 16 homers and 40 runs batted in in 92 games for the Angels last season, says he would be willing to take less money to go with a playoff contender. He also said Philadelphia has the financial edge.

“We’re willing to take a little less,” he said, “but if there’s a $200,000 or $300,000 difference, we may have to watch the playoffs on our new big-screen TV.”
