To raise money for the Orange County Muscular Dystrophy Assn., firefighters on Nov. 30 will shuttle package-laden shoppers to their cars at the Westminster and Mission Viejo malls.
Mall patrons who accept the chauffeured golf-cart rides will be asked to make donations to the charity. Tax deduction slips will be available.
Firefighters from Orange County Fire Authority stations in Los Alamitos and San Juan Capistrano are set to operate the service in Mission Viejo, organizers said, while the Huntington Beach Fire Department is helping out in Westminster.
“It seems like everybody trusts a firefighter, and they are a big sponsor for MDA,” said Albert Parra, program coordinator of the Muscular Dystrophy Assn. of Orange County.
Last year, using boot-shaped collection containers, firefighters raised $13,000 for the charity.
Money collected at the malls will directly benefit a summer camp for children with muscular dystrophy, ongoing research at UC Irvine and a clinic at Children’s Hospital of Orange County. About 1,100 Orange County residents with the disease rely on the agency for help.
Association representatives, patients and their families will be at the malls to answer questions about muscular dystrophy and county efforts to treat it.
