Search of Collapsed Building Suspended

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A canine search team recovered one body and detected others but found no signs of life in the mountain of concrete and metal left from a gas explosion that killed at least 19 people. Rescuers wanted to enter the rubble-filled basement of the collapsed six-story San Juan building, where they expect to find bodies. But the search largely was suspended so workers could shore up the tattered structure with a six-story scaffold of steel beams. In addition to those killed, about 80 people were hurt by flying glass shards and tumbling concrete in the explosion Thursday morning, which hit as shoppers were turning out in the busy Rio Piedras district. Dozens were being treated at area hospitals. At least 10 bodies were believed trapped in the commercial building, and relatives and friends reported 30 people missing.
