At least three people were injured Sunday night in a multi-vehicle accident on the Corona del Mar Freeway, authorities said.

The two most seriously injured victims were trapped inside their cars and had to be freed by firefighters. Both victims were airlifted from the scene, one to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, the other to UCI Medical Center in Orange. Their names and conditions are unknown.

A third victim was transported by ambulance.

Details of the accident were sketchy, but officials said it involved four cars traveling south on the Corona del Mar Freeway near the Jamboree Road exit. Three of the cars came to rest off the roadway.

The California Highway Patrol is trying to determine whether alcohol played a role in the crash, but officials said it was too early to pinpoint the cause.

Firefighters from Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and the Orange County Fire Authority responded to the accident, which briefly forced the closure of both sides of the freeway.
