McGrogan Nears His 100th Victory

Martin McGrogan, in his seventh season as the Irvine Valley men’s soccer coach, can get his 100th victory today when the Lasers play at Santa Barbara in a first-round Southern California playoff game.

McGrogan, who has led Irvine Valley to a state title and three conference titles, has a 99-33-26 record.

Irvine Valley, seeded sixth, and No. 3 Santa Barbara will play at 3 p.m. This is Irvine Valley’s first postseason appearance since beating Santa Barbara for the state title in 1993.

Rancho Santiago, the defending state champion, is seeded second and hosts No. 7 San Diego Mesa at 1 today.

Speaking of 100: Gene Murphy got career victory 100 when Fullerton beat San Diego Mesa Nov. 16th.

Murphy won 18 games in two seasons at North Dakota, 63 in 13 seasons at Cal State Fullerton and 19 in four seasons at Fullerton College.

Women’s volleyball: Michelle Halliday, a sophomore middle blocker from Fullerton, and Mariah Marquis, a freshman outside hitter from Golden West, were selected to the all-state team.

Tina Bowman, a sophomore outside hitter from Golden West, made the All-Southern California team.
