Workers Say New Health Facility Is Making Them Sick

Share

With Pasadena health workers saying that they are literally sick of the municipality’s new multimillion-dollar health center, city officials capped possibly suspect toilet drains Monday in an adjacent building and changed all the facility’s air filters.

More than a dozen employees at the newly opened health center have complained of headaches, nausea, burning eyes and lethargy in the last month, according to a grievance filed by the local chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

On Nov. 7, less than a month after the $14-million health center opened, workers called the Fire Department to investigate what they thought was a natural gas leak. Firefighters found nothing.

However, Assistant City Manager Edmund Sotelo told the City Council on Monday that the city did stop painting the new facility, cap the toilets and install the air filters.
