School District Agrees to Buy Out Superintendent
The Whittier Union High School District Board of Trustees voted to buy out Supt. Lee Eastwood’s contract Monday in exchange for the withdrawal of a taxpayer lawsuit against the board.
Eastwood, placed on administrative leave in August over accusations that he tried to influence last year’s board elections, will receive up to 18 months’ wages under the agreement. His $113,000-a-year contract was set to expire in June 1999.
“I think [the agreement] is favorable given the circumstances,” Eastwood said.
As part of the agreement, a group of district taxpayers who had demanded Eastwood’s reinstatement promised to withdraw its lawsuit against board members.
The group had argued that the board’s investigation of the charges against Eastwood constituted a waste of public money.
