New Member Adds to Council’s Agenda

He hasn’t even been sworn in as a member of the City Council yet, but Henry Wedaa has already gotten down to business. He has added to the agenda for tonight’s council meeting a topic controversial in the past: the city’s plan to improve Imperial Highway.

Wedaa has been critical of the city’s proposal to widen and landscape the thoroughfare. During his campaign for office, he denounced current council members for moving forward with the project without first conducting an environmental impact report.

He also advocated putting the project to a vote of residents before proceeding.

Mayor John Gullixson said an environmental impact report was never conducted because the Orange County Transportation Authority did not require one before funding the project. The council has simply followed the recommendations made by OCTA, Gullixson said.

Wedaa retired from the council in 1994 after serving six terms. He will be sworn in tonight along with incumbent members Barbara Kiley and Mark Schwing.

The council meets at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 4845 Casa Loma Ave. Information: (714) 961-7100.
