University to Hold Santa Lucia Festival

Share

Cal Lutheran University will hold its annual Santa Lucia festival of lights on Dec. 11, a fixture of the school’s Christmas celebrations since its earliest days.

The traditional Swedish festival in memory of the Christian martyr Santa Lucia, who was burned at the stake in 304 A.D., will begin at 10 a.m. at the Samuelson Chapel, 60 W. Olsen Road.

Each year, Cal Lutheran’s student body selects five women on campus to represent Santa Lucia and her brides, based upon the Christian attributes of faith, hope, charity and compassion. Five men are also selected to portray sages.

The free Christmas ceremony, which culminates in the lighting of Santa Lucia’s crown of candles, is performed by students as an embodiment of the true spirit of the holiday season.
