SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The proposal for a civilian airport at El Toro has won the endorsement of the City Council, which states in a resolution that the project is highly desirable and would be an economic boon to all of Orange County.

The council’s action, strongly supporting the conversion of El Toro Marine Corps Air Station to a civilian field when the base closes, came at the request of George L. Argyros, chairman of the pro-airport organization called Citizens for Jobs & the Economy.

In a letter to the city, Argyros noted that a majority of Villa Park voters have favored conversion of the Marine base into a civilian airport.

“The opposition, funded by public dollars, remains well-organized and adamant against the airport option,” Argyros said. “Therefore, it is critical and imperative that we give support to what your constituents have supported.”

The City Council’s resolution states that an airport “is by far the most beneficial reuse of El Toro, allowing businesses and travelers access to national and international markets.”

A civilian airport, the council resolution states, “is the only reuse scenario that is consistent with the Orange County General Plan.”
