City, Builders to Meet on Housing Plan

Share

City officials have agreed to meet with representatives of four development companies as part of a long-running effort to build affordable housing on Gisler Field in downtown Moorpark.

City Council members said Wednesday they would discuss the project with Braemar, Cabrillo Economic Development Corp., Colmer Development and West Ventures.

According to guidelines set by the council, the project should include single-family, detached residences along the west property line and should have eight houses per acre. The developers will be allowed to submit ideas with higher density in some portions of the eight-acre site.

Council members, however, said they did not want to place too many conditions on the project for fear of hampering the companies’ ability to create a workable design.

“Let’s make it loose enough that we can get the most creativity from the professionals,” Councilman Chris Evans said.

The housing project, which would be just south of Poindexter Avenue, is the last portion of a larger city redevelopment effort that has already turned adjacent land into a city park and a shopping complex, complete with a newly opened movie theater.
