Plane Runs Out of Fuel, Lands on Freeway

A small private plane that ran out of fuel landed safely on the Antelope Valley Freeway Thursday afternoon.

The pilot had intended to take off again from the freeway after refueling, but Federal Aviation Administration officials did not allow it, said Diana Joubert, a spokeswoman for the agency.

“They’re going to take the wings off and haul it out of there in a truck,” Joubert said.

She said there was no damage to the plane or highway.

The plane landed a few minutes after 1 p.m. on the northbound lanes just south of Sand Canyon Road, said California Highway Patrol officer Brian Lotterman. He said the two unidentified occupants pushed the craft to the side of the road and called for a fuel truck from Van Nuys Airport. The truck arrived and refueled the plane for takeoff before FAA officials intervened.

Flying an airplane without an adequate reserve of fuel on board is a violation of FAA regulations.
