Notre Dame Streak No Longer Dogs USC

Don’t look now, but Notre Dame has beaten USC only once in the last three years.

Well, what do you know? That 13-year-old Notre Dame dog finally passed away from old age.

There is a God! And through the overtime rule in college football, he will always remind Notre Dame you play to win.

Take a hike to the 10,000 Trojan fans who left the game after Notre Dame scored its last touchdown. Those are probably the same 10,000 who wanted John Robinson fired before the kickoff.

It took 14 years and a complete overhaul of the rules of college football, but USC finally managed to squeak out a victory over Notre Dame.

Congratulations to this year’s team, and I look forward to their next victory over the Irish in 2010.

When Alabama used to lose close games, Bear Bryant would say, “We just ran out of time.”

That may well have been part of USC’s problem with Notre Dame the past decade.

It’s me fault! Me fell from the bloomin’ goal pipe!

USC beat Notre Dame on Nov. 30, 1974, in Ara Parseghian’s last regular-season game. Now Lou Holtz is leaving with a loss to USC. I screamed, lost my voice and rejoiced in ‘74, and I’m glad to have been in the Coliseum in ’96.

My fellow USC fans seemed to take a great deal of pleasure in how our team made Lou Holtz’s last game “his worst defeat ever.” That is no reason to cheer. The defeat also cost Notre Dame $8 million because they could not receive an alliance bowl berth. Now there’s a reason to cheer!

Perhaps someday we can do the same for UCLA.

After reading columns from Mike Downey bashing the Trojans and John Robinson, I awaited what he would have to say after USC played courageous and timely football on Saturday.

Did we get, “I’m sorry?” How about, “I pounded the nails in Robinson’s coffin and started jumping on the lid too soon?”

No, he tried to divert and digress by waxing eloquent about what a wonderful day of college football it had been all across our fair land.

Thankfully, I have now seen Downey for what he is and will line the bottom of my trash can with his writings, in the future, unread. Fight On! Long live USC and pray for an overhaul of the ND Times sports staff.

My first question, “Will John Robinson be rehired?” has already been answered, which leads to my second question:

“How early in 1997 will the coach be predicting a national championship?”

Even the blind squirrel finds the acorn sometimes. Big deal. SC finally backs into a win after 13 years, courtesy of four turnovers and a missed PAT by the Irish. They act like they’ve won the national championship.

I have been a devout Notre Dame fan since the day I was born.

I now work with two people from Ohio, and I live next door to March Air Force Base here in Southern California.

And you think you’ve got problems.
