Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed two pit bull terriers after the animals attacked a third dog tied up in a backyard Monday afternoon.

According to sheriff’s accounts, an unnamed woman living in the 100 block of East Los Angeles Avenue called 911 at about 4:45 p.m., reporting that two pit bulls were mauling her dog.

The first officer at the scene attempted to stop the pit bulls with pepper spray but was unsuccessful. After a second deputy arrived, each officer fired a fatal shot at the pit bulls to prevent them from killing the animal they were attacking.

The injured pet suffered deep bites to an ear and other injuries. It was taken by its owner to a veterinarian for treatment.

A friend of the pit bulls’ owner, who came looking for the animals after they had been shot, told authorities the dogs had escaped from a yard three blocks away.

The shooting is under investigation by the department’s personnel bureau, as in all cases in which a deputy fires a weapon.
