A 43-year-old man was sentenced to 18 months in jail after being found guilty of punching his wife and barricading himself with her and their two small children, authorities said Tuesday.

Vidal Carrillo Carrillo of Van Nuys was sentenced Friday by Van Nuys Municipal Judge Barry Taylor, according to Mike Qualls of the Los Angeles city attorney’s office.

After a five-day trial, a jury found Carrillo guilty of one count of spousal battery and two counts of child endangering, according to court documents.

The charges against him stemmed from a fight he had with his 19-year-old wife on Oct. 22, said Patrick Shibuya, the deputy city attorney who handled the case.

At about midnight, Carrillo struck his wife in the face after a heated argument, Shibuya said. Her sister, who was at the couple’s apartment during the fight, called police, saying that Carrillo had a gun.

Officers sealed off the area and evacuated part of the complex, authorities said. Carrillo refused to come out and barricaded himself with his wife, their 2-year-old boy and 10-month-old girl, according to authorities.

Officers persuaded Carrillo to surrender in the predawn hours, authorities said. His wife came out with a swollen left cheekbone and blood on her nose.

The officers found a loaded .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol and a box of ammunition in one of the bedrooms where the children were found, Shibuya said.
