Funds Sought to Air County’s Meetings

They won’t arrive on anyone’s television soon, but Ventura County supervisors have agreed in principle to broadcast their meetings.
The Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday in favor of showing their meetings on cable television. But several said they wanted more information on who would pay for the needed broadcasting equipment.
Board Chairman Frank Schillo had suggested that the money--estimated at $250,000--would come from the cable television companies servicing the county’s unincorporated areas. The companies, in turn, would get the cash from subscribers, who would pay about 19 cents a month to fund the project.
Some supervisors, however, said they didn’t want residents of the unincorporated areas footing the bill for a countywide service. “I don’t see adding a ‘tax’ for this equipment on those folks,” Supervisor Susan Lacey said.
The board directed county staff to provide more funding options before the project goes forward.
