Van Nuys : Slaying Suspect in Critical Condition

A man who allegedly shot his former live-in girlfriend to death outside a fast-food restaurant before turning the gun on himself was in critical condition Thursday, police said.

Yanira Elizabeth Moz, 21, was shot in the chest in the parking lot of a McDonald’s restaurant, 7045 Van Nuys Blvd., at 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, said Los Angeles Police Det. Stephen Fisk. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Moz’s estranged boyfriend, Julio Guzman, 23, was the suspected gunman.

The couple had lived together for more than two years but separated over the summer because of domestic violence, Fisk said. Last month, Guzman allegedly hit her in the face, breaking her nose, but “she continued to see him though all these years and these events,” the detective said.

The pair were sitting together in Guzman’s car when Moz was shot in the upper torso, Fisk said.

Guzman then telephoned a friend, telling him what he had done and saying he intended to kill himself, Fisk said.

By the time Guzman’s friend arrived at the Van Nuys restaurant, he found Moz dead and Guzman with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Fisk said.

Guzman was taken to a local hospital and later transferred to County-USC Medical Center.
