A Lack of ‘Substance’

Share

I take exception to John Anderson’s review of “The Substance of Fire” (Calendar, Dec. 6). If he doesn’t like the screenplay, OK. But I have trouble with his reasons why, such as his complaints about the “incomplete history” of the story.

One example: He chastises writer Jon Robin Baitz for not explaining how Isaac Geldhart (Ron Rifkin) accumulated his wealth without business acumen when it was clearly stated in the film that his late wife was the brains behind the biz side of the publishing house. Another: Anderson complains that the motivation behind Isaac’s drive for culture and truth at all costs is never fully explained. What? It’s the whole point of the film from the first frame onward.

The filmmakers produced an erudite, engaging and absolutely unique film far from the usual Hollywood hack fare. Boo to Anderson for a review that will help keep some people from seeing it.
