Pierce Class Trains Aspiring Lifeguards

Share

Pierce College is asking students to think about summer in the middle of winter, as registration begins for its lifesaving course to help train people to become lifeguards.

The semester-long course will be taught by the college’s aquatics supervisor, Eldin Onsgard, and will involve building swimming skills and improving physical conditioning.

Students also will be taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid, as well as skills needed while standing guard at swimming pools, lakes and the beach.

Students who successfully complete the course will be eligible to take the test for a Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate.

The class will meet from 10 to 11 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays beginning Jan. 13. Course credits are transferable to either the UC or Cal State systems.

To attend Pierce, students must be 18 or older or have parental permission. There is no application fee, but there is a fee of $13 per unit for residents.

To receive an application for enrollment, call the admissions office at (818) 719-6404.
