Permit Parking Near School Is on Agenda

Share

The city’s public works staff wants to set up a permanent program to allow parking by permits only near El Dorado High School to keep school visitors from overflowing into the nearby neighborhood.

The City Council tonight is expected to consider imposing a permit zone on portions of Brookhaven, Swanee and Susquehanna avenues.

In recent months, residents have complained that athletic activities and other high school events cause traffic congestion, noise, speeding and blocked driveways in the neighborhood.

People are even changing clothes in public, residents say.

In October, a temporary permit parking program went into effect on Brookhaven and portions of area side streets. But some residents objected to the parking plan.

In efforts to come up with a solution to appease all residents, city staff met twice in November with a group of seven area homeowners to identify problems and develop alternatives.

Public Works Director Christopher Becker said that residents walked the area and spoke with neighbors about their concerns. The city also sent a survey to residents.

Becker said the proposal before the council tonight garners “a greater majority of people agreeing to the limits of the permit zone.”

The proposal includes eliminating permit parking on north Brookhaven to Bastanchury Road, as well as on Little Big Horn and Rio Grande avenues.

Permit parking is proposed for both sides of Brookhaven from the 1700 block south to Yorba Linda Boulevard and on portions of Swanee and Susquehanna.

Becker said the city received a petition Monday from 17 homeowners on Brookhaven, Swanee and Susquehanna favoring permit parking.

The council meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in council chambers, 401 E. Chapman Ave. Information: (714) 993-8231.
