Texas Gets Victory--but Barely

Reggie Freeman continued his strong play with 28 points as No. 14 Texas overcame foul trouble to hold off Oregon State, 86-83, in a nonconference game Wednesday night at Corvallis, Ore.

Freeman, coming off a career-high 43 points against Fresno State last Saturday, scored 15 points in the first half against the Beavers as the Longhorns (6-1) opened a 44-34 halftime lead.

Brandy Perryman added 20 points for Texas, which had three players foul out and three more pick up four fouls. Carson Cunningham scored 28 points and Ron Grady added 15 for Oregon State (3-3), which had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but Corey Benjamin missed on a three-pointer from the right wing.

No. 12 North Carolina 67, Louisiana State 48--Antawn Jamison had 26 points and 15 rebounds, and North Carolina struggled offensively before pulling away at Greensboro, N.C.

The Tar Heels (7-1) won their seventh in a row since a season-opening loss to Arizona despite playing without the injured Ed Cota, defeating the road-weary Tigers (3-6) for the eighth consecutive time in the series.

No. 20 Alabama 72, North Texas 55--Anton Reese scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half, leading Alabama at Tuscaloosa.

The Crimson Tide (9-0) led from start to finish. Its biggest advantage, 29 points, came with 5:52 to play when Ricky Poole made a free throw to cap a 10-0 run and make it 70-41.

David Miller led North Texas (3-5) with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

No. 22 Stanford 105, Alaska Anchorage 70--Making three-pointers with seeming ease, Stanford took a 28-point lead by halftime and went on to win at Palo Alto.

Kris Weems made seven three-pointers and scored a career-high 21 points. Tim Young had 18 points and nine rebounds.

The Cardinal (5-1), seventh in the nation in three-point shooting, attempted 24 shots from three-point range and made a school-record 14 (58.3%). Alaska Anchorage is 7-3.

Stacey Nolen scored a season-high 22 points to pace Louisiana Tech (3-5) to a 73-49 victory over DePaul (1-6) at Rosemont, Ill. . . . Damon Stringer scored 19 points as Ohio State (5-1) overcame a listless start with a 19-0 run to post an 81-40 victory over Alabama State (1-7) at Columbus. . . . Todd Burgan and Jason Cipolla combined to make eight three-pointers and score 38 points as Syracuse (6-4) coasted to a 78-57 victory over visiting Nevada Las Vegas (4-2).
