Independent Unit to Probe Harassment in LAPD Is Funded
More than two years after the Los Angeles Police Commission voted to establish an independent unit to investigate complaints of discrimination and harassment, the City Council on Friday appropriated the funds to get it up and running.
Voting unanimously, the council approved a contract for $472,000 with Golden State Management Services to run the unit for one year. The investigators will operate outside the LAPD and report to the Police Commission.
Establishment of the unit, which was triggered by a series of news stories and wrenching City Council hearings about allegations of racism, sexism and harassment in the ranks of the LAPD, had been sidetracked by City Hall politics, budget battles and mismanagement. It has also been scaled back, from an original conception of 14 employees to six.
