Kent Cooper, who has been in charge of ensuring public access to campaign finance records since 1975, is leaving the Federal Election Commission to lead a nonprofit center that studies the role of money in politics.

The Center for Responsive Politics announced Thursday that Cooper was chosen by its board of directors to replace Ellen Miller, the educational center’s executive director since 1984.

She is leaving to start a nonprofit organization that will focus on promoting campaign finance reform.
