From Associated Press

It turns out Princeton also puts a scare into national powers in games that aren’t part of the NCAA tournament.

No. 12 North Carolina withstood a second-half barrage of three-point baskets Sunday and escaped Jadwin Gym at Princeton, N.J., with a 69-60 victory over the Tigers.

The Tar Heels (9-1) won their ninth consecutive game despite blowing all but three points of a 16-point second-half lead.

Brian Earl’s three-point basket, Princeton’s 10th of the second half, brought the Tigers (5-3) within 63-60 with 1:26 to play and had the sellout crowd thinking of last season’s NCAA first-round upset of defending champion UCLA.

But freshman Ed Cota made a driving jump shot from inside the foul line with 50 seconds to play, making it 65-60.

No. 5 Iowa State 59, Texas-El Paso 48--The Cyclones got 15 points from Dedric Willoughby and held the Miners scoreless for 5 1/2 minutes early in the second half in the championship game of the ISU Holiday Classic at Ames, Iowa.

Iowa State (8-0) scored 12 consecutive points during the Miners’ drought and pulled away, giving Coach Tim Floyd a victory in his meeting with his former boss, Texas-El Paso’s Don Haskins. UTEP fell to 5-2.

No. 8 Clemson 76, Texas A&M; 64--Terrell McIntyre scored 21 points and Greg Buckner added 19, leading the Tigers to the victory at College Station, Texas.

Clemson (10-1) led, 38-21, at halftime, but the Aggies (6-2) opened the second half with a 22-9 run, including six points by Jerald Brown, to close to 47-43 with 10:38 remaining.

Larry Thompson’s basket with 8:54 left again brought the Aggies within four points, but Texas A&M; never got closer.

No. 11 Duke 100, Army 38--In a game that at times resembled wrestling more than basketball, the Blue Devils gave Coach Mike Krzyzewski a victory over his alma mater at Durham, N.C.

During his postgame comments to the media, Army Coach Dino Gaudio apologized to Krzyzewski and Duke for his team’s rough play.

Duke (8-2) used a 25-0 first-half run to hand Army its second-worst loss in school history. The Cadets (3-2) lost to Union, 81-13, before World War I. Greg Newton scored 22 for the Blue Devils.

No. 22 Stanford 83, Seton Hall 81 (OT)--Brevin Knight, who finished with only one field goal, made two free throws with 3.6 seconds left in overtime to lift the Cardinal to victory at East Rutherford, N.J.
