New Penguin Line Fine as Maple Leafs Fall, 6-5

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ newest line--Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Ron Francis--continued its devastating play by combining for 10 points in a 6-5 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night.

Jagr had three assists to go with his league-leading 32nd and 33rd goals while reclaiming the NHL scoring lead from Wayne Gretzky of the idle New York Rangers.

Buffalo 0, New Jersey 0--Goaltenders Dominik Hasek and Martin Brodeur each made 37 saves as the Sabres and Devils played a tie at East Rutherford, N.J.

It was the first scoreless tie in Devil history and the sixth for the Sabres, their second this year.

The Devils extended their unbeaten streak to seven (5-0-2). For Brodeur, the shutout was the 15th of his career and his third this season.

Buffalo had its four-game winning streak ended. Hasek earned his fifth shutout of the season, tying Patrick Roy of Colorado for the NHL lead. It was the 20th shutout of Hasek’s career.

San Jose 2, Dallas 1--Darren Turcotte scored with 20.4 seconds left as San Jose snapped a four-game losing streak in Dallas. Turcotte scored off Jeff Friesen’s centering pass by Andy Moog for his eighth goal.

Kelly Hrudey had 22 saves for the Sharks.

The Stars were returning home after sweeping a four-game trip, but continued to struggle at Reunion Arena, where they are 2-5-1 in their last eight games.

Edmonton 7, Vancouver 0--Andre Kovalenko, Ryan Smyth and Dean McAmmond scored two goals apiece and Bob Essensa stopped 26 shots for his 16th career shutout as the Oilers snapped a seven-game winless streak with a rout of the Canucks in Vancouver.

Colorado 4, Calgary 3--Eric Lacroix scored a wraparound goal at 19:15 of the third period and Joe Sakic scored his 300th goal for the Avalanche in Denver. In a battle of backup goalies, Colorado’s Craig Billington outdueled Calgary’s Dwayne Roloson, stopping 30 shots to Roloson’s 26.

Washington 3, Tampa Bay 1--Peter Bondra scored his team-high 16th goal and Dale Hunter added three assists for the Capitals, who snapped their six-game road winless streak. Tampa Bay has lost four consecutive games.

Chicago 3, Boston 3--Troy Mallette scored with 6:30 left in the third period as the Bruins overcame a pair of disallowed goals and earned a tie at Boston.

Alexei Zhamnov, Bob Probert and James Black scored for Chicago. Ed Belfour stopped 34 shots for the Blackhawks.

Florida 4, New York Islanders 3--Ray Sheppard’s goal at 1:46 of overtime spoiled a three-goal third period comeback by the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y.

Ottawa 6, Montreal 0--Daniel Alfredsson had a goal and three assists as the Senators limited the Canadiens to only 14 shots--one shy of the team record for fewest shots in a game--in Montreal.
